“Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to putting our values into action — by choosing to work with Black banks and drawing attention to the need for Black banks to thrive as they work toward addressing the lack of access to capital in Black communities,” Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler said in the news release.
“Many of these young entrepreneurs didn’t grow up with the network of Wall Street contacts, of banking contacts, of venture-capital contacts, of private-equity contacts,” said Ressler. “It doesn’t make it a lesser business, [it] makes the business less connected maybe, but not less valuable.”
The NBA and Players Association on Friday announced eight inaugural members of the NBA Foundation board of directors, with Hawks owner Tony Ressler included on the list.

On Sunday, Atlanta Hawks owner Tony Ressler took out a full-page ad in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Ressler thanked Vince Carter for his extraordinary career and for being a mentor to the team’s younger players. “On behalf of the Atlanta Hawks and all our fans, we want to thank you spending the last two years of your extraordinary career with us,” Ressler said. “I speak for myself, and know that Steve, Travis and Lloyd echo these sentiments – you have been an invaluable mentor to our young players, a remarkable member of the Atlanta community and an outstanding role model to our organization.”
