Sam Burns’ Biography

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Sam Burns is an American professional golfer whose first season on the PGA Tour was in 2019. Sam’s 2021 season got off to a great start, with a 3rd place finish at the Genesis Invitational, where he tied the 36-hole record with a score of 64-66, and T7 finishes at the Safeway Open and Vivint Houston Open. In each tournament, he held leads after the second round, as well as after the third round of the Houston Open.

Sam notched his first PGA Tour victory at the 2021 Valspar Championship, finishing at an impressive 17-under par and winning by 3 strokes. He grabbed a share of the lead after shooting an 8-under 63 in round 2.

Sam played very well throughout the 2020 season and qualified for the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row, buttressed by five top-25s. His best finishes came at The American Express (T6), where he also notched his career-low round of 63, the Wyndham Championship (T13), and the Workday Charity Open (T17). He finished the season ranked 111th in the FedEx Cup.

In 2019, Sam notched his first top-5 finish on the PGA Tour, with a T3 finish at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He shot an impressive 15-under, tying with Carlos Ortiz. Sam represented the United States as a member of the winning 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup team. As an amateur, he competed and finished tied for sixth in the PGA Tour's 2017 Barbasol Championship. In only his fifth start of his rookie season on the Korn Ferry Tour, Sam won the 2018 Savannah Golf Championships, his first professional victory.

As a member of the Louisiana State University golf team, Sam had four victories in 15 collegiate tournaments, leading him to be honored as the NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year. Sam was also individual state champion three times and was named AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year in 2014.
