Matthias Kohlbecker’s Biography

Matthias Kohlbecker is a German architect and entrepreneur who has been Managing Director at Kohlbecker Gesamptplan GmbH for close to three decades. He is the third generation Kohlbecker in this role, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Karl, and his father, Christoph, in the 90-year-old family business.

Kohlbecker Gesamptplan GmbH is at the forefront of industrial architecture in Europe and through the recent development of their world-leading digital platform, AVAT AR, the company has ensured their continued success in the immediate future.

The architectural family firm, with offices in Gaggenau, Munich and Cologne, is particularly known for their design work in the automotive industry and has created automotive plants for a range of different car brands all over the world. They were also responsible for the design of the ski jump for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, along with the ski resort in Krasnaya Polyana for the same Olympic Games. At the beginning of his career, Matthias managed the Renzo Piano / Christoph Kohlbecker GmbH office in Berlin at the time of their high-profile work on the Daimler-Benz development at Potsdamer Platz.

A lecturer at the University of Stuttgart contributing to their Industrial Real Estate Management (IREM) master’s programme, Matthias also sits on the Advisory Board of the IREM master’s course at the university. He holds further advisory roles at RGM Holding GmbH, Leithart Holding GmbH, Qalgo GmbH and Vielmo Architekten GmbH.

He gained early experience through an internship at Richard Meier Architects in New York and followed that up with work at the architectural office of Heinle, Wischer & Partner in Stuttgart.

Having studied architecture at the University of Applied Sciences in Biberach, Matthias graduated with a degree in engineering.
