Bryson DeChambeau’s Biography

Bryson DeChambeau is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. His nickname 'The Scientist', from his Physics major at SMU, reflects his analytical approach to golf. His first major title came at the 2020 US Open, winning by an impressive six strokes.

Hailing from Clovis, California, DeChambeau won the California State Junior Championship at age 16. He won a scholarship to Southern Methodist University and in 2015 became only the fifth player to win both the NCAA and US Amateur titles in the same year. He joined an illustrious list of names in the process, including Jack Nicklaus (1961), Phil Mickelson (1990), Tiger Woods (1996), and Ryan Moore (2004).
Bryson DeChambeau is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour and is known as 'The Scientist.' His nickname comes from his Physics major at SMU and reflects his analytical approach to golf. His first major title came at the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot, winning by an impressive six strokes.

Hailing from Clovis, California, DeChambeau won the California State Junior Championship at age 16. He won a scholarship to Southern Methodist University and in 2015 became only the fifth player to win both the NCAA and US Amateur titles in the same year. He joined an illustrious list of names in the process, including Jack Nicklaus (1961), Phil Mickelson (1990), and Tiger Woods (1996). DeChambeau played in the 2016 Masters as an amateur and finished tied for sixteenth place, the best finish for an amateur that year. He turned professional after the Masters.

He is known for his unconventional, but now widely recognizable, swing. After coach Mike Schy suggested the books “The Golfing Machine” by Homer Kelle and “Vector Putting” by H.A. Templeton to DeChambeau, they began to develop and test his new swing, which, due to his tour performance, has clearly been quite effective. Unlike other players, DeChambeau has also opted to use irons and wedges of equal length (37.5 inches, the average length of his favorite 7-iron) in his play.

DeChambeau went on to qualify for the US Open and finished tied for fifteenth place. His first professional win was the DAP Championship, which also earned him a PGA Tour Card for the 2017 PGA Tour. His first PGA Tour victory came in the John Deere Classic in his first year. He has since added seven more PGA Tour titles. In 2019, he recorded his first win on the European Tour at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in Dubai, UAE, a tournament he won by seven shots.

DeChambeau was a Captain’s Pick in the 2018 US Ryder Cup Team. He is easily recognized on the golf course by his Ben Hogan-style cap.
