Alexander Gilkes is the co-founder of Paddle8, the auction house for the 21st century. He was formerly one of the youngest executives at LVMH and served as Chief Auctioneer at Phillips de Pury, where he hammered down new records for the company, including a $56-million Rothko. Widely recognized as the leading auctioneer of his generation, he has wielded the gavel for causes from the Guggenheim to Elton John’s Academy Awards auction. In total, Alexander has sold over $1 billion of art and design. Raised in London and educated at Eton, he has been based in New York since 2008.

In 2011, Alexander Gilkes cofounded the New York online auction house Paddle8 with partners Aditya Julka and Osman Khan. The following year, Alexander Zacke launched Auctionata, a Berlin-based online enterprise, with his wife, Susanne, and Georg Untersalmberger. In May of this year, Gilkes and Zacke announced they had joined forces to become a major player in the auction house industry, with Zacke serving as chief executive officer of the merged entity and Gilkes as chief innovation of officer.

Online auction business Paddle8 has secured backing from a multi-family office called Lightyear Collective that has bolstered Paddle8 management’s buyout of its business from Auctionata...“While the merger with Auctionata was not what we had hoped, we’re thrilled to be operating as an independent company once again,” says Alexander Gilkes, Paddle8’s president and co-founder. An overhaul of the group’s technology will follow, Gilkes says.
